Korean coach leads Malaysia team

On the afternoon of January 21, the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) appointed Mr. Kim Pan-gon as the head coach of the national team. FAM President Hamidin Mohd Amin said the appointment of the Korean strategist was because he had a good understanding of Malaysian football.

Coach Pan-gon will sign a 2-year contract, with a 2-year extension option. He was recruited by his assistants to the Malaysian team, including analysts, assistant coaches, technical and fitness coaches.

“FAM received many applications from all over the world. We looked at several categories before making a decision. Obviously, people who know football, Malaysian players and have led the national team. country will take precedence,” said the FAM President.Hmetro said four Korean coaches were on the shortlist of FAM, to replace Mr. Tan Cheng Hoe. Kim Pan-gon is a former coach of U23 and the Hong Kong (China) team in the period 2009-2017. He is currently the Head of the Supervisory Board of the Korean team.

The chair of Malaysia head coach was vacant, after Tan Cheng Hoe resigned, because the team did not qualify for the group stage of the AFF Cup 2020. At that time, Malaysia won Cambodia and Laos, but lost to two direct competitors. are Vietnam and Indonesia.

“The recruitment of the Korean coach is based on our own research, for what is best for the national team. That is what FAM chooses,” said Chairman Amin.

Mr. Pan-gon will be the third Korean coach to lead teams in Southeast Asia at this time, next to Shin Tae-yong (Indonesia team) and Park Hang-seo (Vietnam team). Coach Pan-gon will come to Malaysia in mid-February to work with FAM.
